Val Lewton is a god, discuss. I'm having a hard time thinking of another single person who has had so much influence on the horror genre.
(hehe- I just had to try out the poll feature.)

I Walked with a Zombie FTW
For the record, it's amusing to read Lewton's story of how he became the head of RKO's horror unit that was formed to make a quick buck for the company after Orson Welles left them penniless. Supposedly, someone commented on Lewton being a "horrible novelist" and the head of RKO understood him to be a "horror novelist" and hired him. He was just a story editor for MGM before and wasn't even a horror fan at all. Which is why he made stuff like Cat People instead of the schlocky creature features RKO expected...

One of my favorite stories about Lewton was about how he was gonna get a promotion to A pictures. He picked Mark Robson to direct for him, but RKO told him that he could use an untried director. He was given an ultimatium: sarcrifice his friend and colleague, or remain in the B picture unit. He decided that if he was going to make movies he was going to do it his way, B-movie or not.
