I have just started to delve into older horror classics, and one thing that surprised me was the number of zombie movies that predated Night of the Living Dead. I find the the voodoo aspect of most of these early flicks to be much more interesting than the newer "Well there's these dead folks that seem to want to eat us..." movies. The two films that have really stood out for me are White Zombie and I Walked With A Zombie. What's everybody else's thoughts on these, and do you know of any other quality early zombie flicks?

ZooDoo? Is that when the animals become mindless drones?

Things to Come (1936) apparently features a "wandering sickness," the effects of which are similar to being a zombie. www.imdb.com/title/tt0028358/

Whoops, fixed now. But, mindless killer zoo animals would be a something I wouldn't mind seeing either.

I agree, as great as I think the Romero zombie idea is (especially for combining with social commentary and satire), the notion of a corpse being re-animated to be bent to someone's sinister will has been sadly overlooked since those earlier movies when the Voodoo theme was being used. Okay, not a "quality" film by any means, but fun for a laugh and does have this Voodoo/zombie motif is Revenge of the Zombies starring John Carradine...he plays a scientist using science and black magic in order to create a race of Nazi, goose-stepping zombies... This is buzzing around the back of my head, but it's unclear because I haven't seen it in many years, but didn't Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow have some similar themes? If that's the one I'm thinking of, I remember finding that quite creepy as a kid.

Revenge of the Zombies sounds like something I'd enjoy. I could watch John Carridine re-paint his living room, mix that with Nazi zombies and that sounds like a fun time!
Serpent and The Rainbow has been on my to-watch list forever. I've just never gotten around to it. I do remember the video box cover scaring the shit out of me when I was little.

I loved White Zombie and it's sadly the ONLY pre_Romero zombie movie I've watched, unless you count The Last Man On Earth. I really love them, but Romero kicked their asses. Vincent Price and Bella Lugosi out-acted the cast from Night of the Living Dead, though.

It's got a great story, it's creepy as hell, and even serves up a few good scares. Right now its in competition with Let Sleeping Corpses Lie for my favorite zombie movie.
