I find it really odd when you find these occasional squabbles going on between rabid Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi fans about which one was better, how they'll sink to slinging mud about Universal's tactics at the time or trout out Karloff's "Poor Bela" comment if they want to set mouths foaming. Even the order in which I've used their names as the subject of this thread would be a point of contention.
I just find it strange because to me they were no different from any other actors of the day other than they both happened to land iconic roles in those early Universal pictures and there was some professional rivalry (quite a lot of which seems to have been exaggerated and indeed welcomed by Universal for publicity purposes, from what I've read of it). Also because I just watched The Raven, The Black Cat and The Invisible Ray quite recently and I thought they worked tremendously together, even if (as I thought with the latter of the movies) the script itself wasn't up to much. I've always had a slight preference for Karloff's acting over Lugosi's because I think he had a way of playing tragic monsters perfectly, but I'd never deny Lugosi's god-given stage presence.
Does anyone here have a staunch preference for one over the other, or are you more even about it? What's your fave Lugosi role and your fave Karloff? What about them together?

I love both of them. At any one time I'll prefer one over the other. I usually want a Lugosi movie when I'm in a more light-hearted mood. These two together was like dynamite in my opinion. They played so well off each other.
Fav Lugosi: White Zombie Fav Karloff: The Body Snatcher Fav Both: The Black Cat
