I first saw this film about 25 years ago, and finally managed to catch up with it again this week. And what a film, it's straight up there amongst my favourite sci-fi/horror films.
**SPOILERS**
It's a simple story with bags of depth. Alex Harris, an obsessive scientist living with his neglected wife Susan (Julie Christie) creates a super-computer that is integrated with all aspects of their home. The computer, 'Proteus', soon starts to think beyond the tasks it was designed for, and traps Susan in the house, with the intention of impregnating her so it can be reborn.
There are shades of '2001' here, from the basic storyline to the psychedelic visual effects that punctuate the film. The theme of 'technology gone crazy' is particularly relevant in this day and age. And what an ending!
Well worth catching up with.

Just added it my netflix queue. I think The Simpsons parodied this on one of the Tree House of Horrors

Sounds very good. I hold your taste in high reguard mr. herod so I'll track it down. Performance is one of my favourite films, and this by the same guy so I reckon I'll enjoy it.

We indeed have similar tastes, so I'm sure you'll like it. It falls somewhere inbetween mainstream 70s cinema and bizarro cult hit. And yeah, 'Performance' is a superb film, from what I remember. I really need to watch it again as it's been a long time. Last time I saw it was about fifteen years ago, and I was high as a kite after necking a bag of 'shrooms. I remember it being quite psychedelic but then again...

In fact, I had a quote from the movie for my signature on IMDb for a long time now . "Death is a gentleman too. He makes good losers of us all."Word
