I watched this film for only the first time tonight as part of my continuing Marins obsession, and though I don't usually write reviews, I am now. Most commonly known for portraying Zé do Caixão in his films, Marins hangs up his signature top hat and cape here to step into the role of a Christ-like figure known as "Finis Hominis," or "The End of Man." He arises from the sea one day, naked, and begins to walk the streets of a Brazilian town, doing good deeds and performing miracles. He begins to gain a following after saving an adulterous woman by making her tormentors see the bad in themselves, and becomes a media sensation after resurrecting a seemingly dead man killed by his conspiring family. Shortly afterward, he announces that his mission is completed and that he must leave. A televised farewell speech (in which he reveals the reason for man's existence) leads to one of the most obliquely humorous, yet still meaningful, endings I've ever seen. Though not as surreal as Marins' earlier O Ritual dos Sádicos, this film contains some psychedelic imagery and themes. (Have you ever seen Brazilian hippies? Neither had I, until I watched Finis Hominis.) The digressive narrative and slow pace may turn off some people, but I think those familiar with Marins' imaginative techniques will enjoy this. There are a couple, not-too-revealing sex scenes and breasts o'plenty to keep things entertaining when the story drags. Fortunately, it's a pretty intriguing "what-if" story from start to finish.

I've had this for AGES but not watched it. Think I will soon now.
