Jacob's Ladder Irréversible (2002) Though I haven't seen The Orphanage, I've heard that has a pretty desolate ending, too.
What some others be?

Are there really any horror films that have happy endings? Even if the good guys live, it always would have been better for the characters if the events had just not happened.

True, but there are some films which end and you just go about your life, and then there are films whose endings leave an impact on you. Those are the ones I'm referring to here.

Irréversible? Wasn't the end of that movie just Monica Belluci laying in the grass reading a book?

How about Inside (2007)? The look on the lady's face as she laid there was downright creepy and heartbreaking.
I didn't think Jacob's Ladder was sad, but more of a release.
If it were done right, 30 Days of Night could have had a pretty sad ending that stayed with you.

King Kong... oh come on, how can you not feel sad for the big ape?
Night of the Living Dead - it's a great, downbeat ending but also you have to feel "he survived all that for THAT to happen??"
Frankenstein - who were the real monsters, I ask you? WHO??
The Orphanage does have a very moving ending, JJ, won't spoil it for you. So does Pan's Labyrinth, to me.
The Dead Zone - he was just trying to save the world from Bush...I mean, umm, a power-mad, insane yokel in the oval office!
Although despite finding all these "sad" endings, curiously I was just glad someone stopped Lon Chaney Jr. looking so damn one-note miserable in The Wolf Man when Claude Rains stoved his head in with that cane... ;D

I found the ending of [REC] quite sad, plus The Orphanage also had a sad ending.
Gee........I do love spanish horror.

Yes, El Orfanato's ending is probably the most emotional parts of any horror film I've ever seen. It's the only horror film that's made me publicly weep. It was terrible. I looked like such a pussy, but didn't care.
See it. Maintenant.

I looked like such a pussy, but didn't care. See it. Maintenant. Not at all, I'm sure it made you seem far more comfortable with your masculinity and mature that you didn't mind crying. *stifles a guffaw* Nah, seriously, I think it's good that it worked on you profoundly, it irritates me when people sit there like automatons and don't become emotionally invested in a movie. The only time the reverse irritates me more is when they bawl their eyes out on cue watching some saccharine, emotionally-manipulative crap that usually passes for the average romantic comedy or anything where John Williams' music blasts away and tells you exactly what emotion you should be feeling at any given time, because we as an audience are far too stupid and insensitive to work that out for ourselves, clearly... I'm ranting again, aren't I?

Well, I've nothing against a good weep-fest at a romance, simply because that's what they're built for, but I know what you're saying. I'd rather suffer real emotion and loss (like El Orfanato) than the end of the crapfest that is Pearl Harbour or something of the like.

Carrie (but that whole movie's sad) Wind Chill? Blair Witch Project, actually, as it turns out, breaks my heart. Ils also deeply disturbed me and made me nearly cry. The Descent... Pan's Labyrinth, although not horror...
I think the happiest ending to a horror film is The Faculty.

Some that haven't been mentioned.
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? May (depending on interpretation, McKee's intention is clear in both commentary tracks though the execution is ambiguous) Ginger Snaps

Wow, I can't believe nobody mentioned the ending to The Mist, although that might be classified under "depressing" instead. The guy finds out his wife is dead, shoots an old man and woman, his newly found love, and his own son only to find out that it was all unnecessary. EDIT: Added a spoiler tag for ya. My mistake, I just figured with the title of the thread we'd be safe. I'll add it next time though either way. SORRY TO ANYONE WHO I SPOILED THE MOVIE FOR! I hate being the spoiler guy and I just did it. I'm gonna go stand in the corner now.

Everyone mentioned the ones that were mostly off the top of my head. The only one I can think of is Sweeney Todd, although it wasn't the saddest ending ever, it still was pretty sad.

I think the ending in The Mist was extremely disheartening. I mean... Thomas Jane's character shoots everyone in an apparent effort to spare his loved ones a seemingly gruesome end, only to have help arrive mere minutes later. Talk about depressing...
