The Franco thread on the other board gave me the idea for this series/game-type thing. Every so often, I'll post a director to be voted on. Feel free to discuss your choice. For Franco, I'm going to have to with "overrated hack." What I've seen of his has been, in a word... terrible. Though I'm sure Carlos Lohan would love to disagree.

I love Jess Franco, and as I just posted on the IMDb thread about it, I'm just gonna copy my reply here...
C'mon, go easy on Uncle Jess! Sure, he's certainly not everyone's kettle of fish, but let's give the guy some respect. Anyone who's crammed over 150 films into their career is bound to have churned out the odd turd or two...or forty......errr, seventy?
Anyway, when he's on form, his films are amongst the most unique, bold and entertaining of the horror/exploit genre. 'The Diabolical Dr Z.', 'A Virgin Among the Living Dead', 'Vampyros Lesbos', 'Macumba Sexual', 'Venus in Furs', 'Eugenie', 'The Awful Dr. Orlof'...I could go on. All classics, and films which I love dearly. I dare anyone to watch the excellent, beautifully shot 'Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun' and then tell me that the man can't even hold a camera straight, let alone direct a decent film. In this day and age of bland, identikit movies, his work is a breath of fresh air.
Anyone who can shoot a slow motion scene by actually making the actors move in slow motion is okay in my book.

Anyway you can add a third option? LoL. I definitely don't think he's a genius as something like Oasis of the Zombies would take away even Bava's genius if he released it. . .
But he's certainly no hack.
He makes fun flicks, and though not very good, at least they're entertaining.
When it comes down to it, I think I'd have to go with the 'overrated,' though. He's definitely not a talented filmmaker. But his films do have the entertainment value.

(Spoiler here - but what do you care?) The scene itself features Franco himself attempting to rape his own daughter, played by Lisa Romay.

Anyway you can add a third option? I thought about offering a middle choice, but I thought I'd force people to make up their minds. ;D I guess I just need to see more of his films to appreciate the man.

I would've done the same thing, lol. Just so people would have to ask for a third option . He is overrated. . . simply because he's not very good, but people say he is. I like quite a few of his films, especially Vampyros Lesbos. . . but, hell, even that's not a very good film.

It is possible to be a complete hack and still be a good filmmaker. People seem to think hack automatically means "untalented".

Hacks are kind of like the writers John Grisham or Janet Evanovich. . . well, that's what hack USED to mean. . . the ones that shell out average-to-low-quality work for the money. Grisham's not as bad, but Evanovich and ones like her are a joke. A 'hack' director I can think of would be Uwe Boll. . . and, even worse, Leigh Scott. They slap together cheapo crap for a paycheck, and that's it. I don't think Franco really cares about a paycheck. . . maybe at one point, but from what I've seen, he makes what he likes.

He's one of my all time favorite directors so he must be a genius. ;D

Well, since I love the stuff I've seen from him, I must vote genius. The ones I've seen are pretty laughable, but I love them.

Wasn't it you that said you saw Oasis of the Zombies? *shiver* That was James, but I did try it for ten minutes. The opening had some good looking actresses, but I turned it off. Mainly because they didn't get nakie and the DVD had terrible quality.

I think he is a bit of maverick. He's churned out some really good quality stuff, but like other people have mentioned, he's also had more than his fare share of stodge. I always think his movies are interesting though. Yes, even Oasis . His movies have got a weird vibe. I like it, and he's definitely one of a kind. Genius or hack? I think he can be equal parts.

Yeah I wasn't having a go at you, more at the vote options. Takashi Miike is one of my favourite directors but I'd freely admit he's a hack. The negative option should just be "overrated, untalented". Though I wouldn't call him overrated. I'd say the opinion on his talent is about 50:50.
