The Mist,
Greater than the sum of its parts!
The Mist has many failings although none so bad as to ruin the film. I’ve no doubt many can easily pull apart various aspects of the film from some dodgy acting, gaping plot holes or any other personal issues they may take with the ideas and their execution and I’d be likely to agree with them, however the areas in which this film lacks didn’t prevent this from being a well paced, entertaining great example of Stephen Kings popularist creativity. Yes there’s some bad acting and there’s plenty of character stereotypes and plenty of pseudo morality and social commentary that’s piled on a bit thick but I was happily taken along with it. There’s no real subtly and it even made the all too modern mistake of excessive use of CGI but I still enjoyed it as an enticing high end B movie. I liked the setting, the everyday supermarket and its everyday inhabitants facing a wall of tense, uncertain, foreboding mist, I also give credit for a nicely bleak ending (although many will cite this as another of its failings). In summary I’d recommend watching this with the same shallow glee as a film like Tremors although with the horror turned up and the intentional comedy turned very much down, if not off all together, however this should not stop you revelling in the slightly qitch characters as they battle the ever more unpleasant creatures as well as themselves and each other!
