Some of you on here probably go there of course. I just have a major question. Would it really hurt you if you didn't go to college RIGHT AWAY? By that I mean after you graduate of course. Is it possible to go years later and still do alright?
I just have this question because I told my mom about my plans after high school. I'm just in the mood to take a break from school and I'm going to move down to TX and live with a good buddy. From there we're gonna try and see if we can start are filmmaking career. We'll also work jobs to make end meets and what not. Main reason I'm working a job now is so that when I move down there I'll have a lot saved up so we'll be able to start off ok. I'm not really wanting to go to college right away like everybody else because like I said I just need a break from school and a chance to get my priorities straight and pursue what I really want to do. If I had the money to go to film school I would, but don't.

I don't think it's necessary to rush right into a university. It's understandable to want to get away from school already, but the longer you wait, the harder it is to get back into the grind so to speak. To answer your question, though, plenty of people go back years later and do all right. I know quite a few people who have gone back and gotten bachelor's degrees in their 40s and 50s.
I personally am going to a community college for two years and then will probably move onto uni.

Tons of people take breaks between high school and college without a problem, but many have trouble adjusting to the academic lifestyle. Some lose the motivation to go to school at all.

Kudos to you, buntcakepan, for knowing what you want to do in life. I realize that I only know you from your posts on here and the good old IMDb, but you seem like a very mature young man. Now...to answer your question: I tried my hand at college right after I graduated high school...it was a no-go. It took me almost 20 years to finally return to the educational realm and attempt to obtain my degree. I graduated this past May 8th with highest honors. Now, I'm not bragging about my accomplishment, but I AM damned proud of it. ;D Honestly, I don't see a problem with your taking a break from school for a bit...if you ask me, you've earned it. But when it comes down to it, only you can really answer that question. I hope that everything works out for you.

There's nothing wrong with taking a break before going to college. If I hadn't I never would have finished. If you want to get into film (or stage tech or television) is getting experience (real tangible experience). To be honest most film schools are a waste of time and money, and way way too many of them focus on theory of above actual practice of. If you want to do your own productions take a film or production class at the local community college or uni, that way you (usually) get access to their equipment (they don't usually pry and it's cheaper than having to buy the shit yourself... much cheaper than renting for every project too). It'll also be better equipment than you can rent (if they have a decent program, so go to one that's linked with a local tv station)

There is definitely nothing wrong with choosing to wait. The same path or direction is not right for everyone. Do remember, though, the more time you wait, the harder it is to return.
