Anyone else been waiting 51 weeks for this? Yeah, figured I was the only one. But, on the small chance there's someone as dorky on here as me and is interested: dsc.discovery.com/convergence/sharkweek/episode-guide/episode-guide.htmlThis series is mostly an attempt to cash in on the public's fear of sharks, but there have been lot of good shows in the past and it's still probably my favorite thing on TV all year long. It's ironic and funny that Discovery has TV spots that run all month long that appear to advertise blood-thirsty beasts ready to rip you to shreds, but preach shark conservation and the reality of shark attacks the rest of the year. Anyway, it says there are six new episodes this year, including shark-infused Mythbusters, Survivorman and Dirty Jobs episodes. It appears they're new, but Mythbusters hosted it a couple years ago and I don't know if it's recycled from then or .... ? Should be good stuff.

When I was a kid, I used to record the whole week on VHS tapes and then make a half-assed box set out of them with cardboard. Of course, that was back when I loved sharks. This series is mostly an attempt to cash in on the public's fear of sharks... It's ironic and funny that Discovery has TV spots that run all month long that appear to advertise blood-thirsty beasts ready to rip you to shreds, but preach shark conservation and the reality of shark attacks the rest of the year. Unfortunately, the majority of the public couldn't give a rat's ass about shark conservation. The only way Discovery can sell the thing is by featuring the violent side of sharks.

No Selachimorpha love anymore? Why not? Lose a close relative to a shark attack? I don't think Tera or Adam have made it over to this bored so I was counting on you to be my fellow marine bio geek for the week. A good example: Last year, one of the shows featured was Ocean of Fear, a documentary style re-telling of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis featuring interviews with some of the survivors. The commercials for it said things like "deadliest recorded shark attack on humans ever" and the like (which isn't a surprise, as that is widely considered to be true). However, once the docu aired, you learn that, according to the survivors, very, very few of the men actual died from shark attacks--possibly as few as one or two or NONE. Those that survived the sinking succumbed to dehydration, drowning, etc., and some of the dead bodies were grabbed by sharks, as opposed to the popular belief that hundreds were eaten by sharks. (Not stating this as a fact, by the way, just repeating what was in the documentary). It was amazing. It interested me greatly; I should do some more research. I guess old Quint's story was inaccurate as hell. Ok. Random, uninteresting tangent over.

Yes! I loves me some Shark Week. I also love me some Mythbusters. Yay. I thought you did. We usually recognize our own kind. And, the mythbusters eps are new, just for the record.
