Just take a look at this site: critcononline.com/video_companies_cover_art.htm#Major%20PlayersMaybe it's the nostalgic old fart in me talking, the one who remembers being a kid in the 80's and wandering the aisles of the local video shop, looking on with wonderment at the covers of the horror section, spending ages making that all important decision of what I was going to take home and watch... but wasn't the art on those chunky VHS (and the occasional Betamax) boxes just so much better than the flaccid, boring covers we have on DVDs now? Wondered if anyone agreed with me and, if you do, post some of your fave horror "art". Some that I remember fondly and still think are great images:

This post just reminded me how awesome non-chain video stores were. I really miss the old-school box arts on VHS and just being able to browse through them and not knowing what I was getting into. There's nothing like being a kid and getting freaked the fuck out right in the middle of the horror section. I'd give anything to feel as scared as I once was while watching a movie as a kid. Thanks for making me suicidal.

There's nothing like being a kid and getting freaked the fuck out right in the middle of the horror section. Agreed. I remember that, as a kid, sometimes the box art would be scarier than the movie itself. A lot of covers scared me, but in particular, I remember The Town that Dreaded Sundown. Seeing the "true story" part made me just about throw the tape down and run out of the store. Some other childhood memories:

Thanks for making me suicidal. All part of the service!! ;D Wait, no, I should really say something more responsible and convincing... *clears throat* "No, don't do it! You have plenty to live for. Umm...Uwe Boll. It would be a waste....and so on and so forth." hehehe And with that, I can just sit back and let the Oscars roll in...
