I'm sure you've seen A Tale of Two Sisters, but that's recommended a lot. I would also suggest Shutter (2004). If we could get ebossert around these parts, this board would be in business.

Jim, I thought AToTS was incredibly irritating at how much you had to pay attention to it. There were too many twists and turns, many that made very little sense. IMO of course.

Admittedly, I only got halfway through it before I turned it off. I did think it was a little too slow for my tastes. But many other people seem to like it, so I thought I was just missing something.

If you don't mind gore or more extreme material, I'd definitely recommend Naked Blood (1995) (Nekeddo burâddo: Megyaku), I thought this was a great flick, very much similar in themes and ideas to Cronenberg's films, like Videodrome with a touch of Shivers.

A didn't like A Tale of Two Sisters either I thought it was slow but it is a favorite amoung asian horror movie fans. If you like the scary long haired ghost movies look at Ju-On and Ju-on 2. The Eye and The Eye 2 (I liked the second one better) Recincarnation , The Ring, The Maid (actually pretty good) and One Missed Call. Good Revenge type films- Oldboy (A must see) Sympathy for Lady Vengence (arthouse film but good also) Mr. Vengence (I didn't see it yet) Alot of people like Miike films if you want to try him out start with Audition it is the tamest of his films I don't really care for his movies but alot of people recommend Ichi the Killer (I hated it) and Imprint as follow ups. I hear Art of the Devil 1 and 2 are good gory Asian movies I have yet to see. Meribeto is a strange twisted movie that is a bit confusing and a must see is Battle Royale who doesn't like to watch kids killing kids right?
Hope that helps Happy Viewing ;D

I've also been meaning to see Battle Royale. I've heard many a good thing about it.

Honestly I think I liked Ju-On 1 a little better than the second one. The remakes were bad. Battle Royale is such a fun movie I think it is supposed to be a drama but I must have a dark sense of humor becuase I laughed my ass off during most of the movie. Fun times.

I got one of the Ju-Ons from Blockbuster Online, but I can't remember which one it was. I read that one of them is really good and the other not so much. I think I got the one that's not so much.

When my horror buddy at work told me about this one, I swore he was talking about a dark comedy. His description certainly had me laughing. He said the closest he could come to catagorizing it was "live action anime."

I recommend Battle Royale first and fore most. It's the best foreign film I've seen, and not just from Asia. It's one of the few perfect horror films. Love it.

Dammit, I've been wanting to see Kwaidan for ages and always forget to look for it when I'm browsing around for movies - thanks for reminding me! And both Onibaba and Tetsuo are great, I'm also fond of Tetsuo II: Body Hammer - to me it uses the sort of garish colour palette of an Argento movie to create a visually rich, real-life anime feel and did it really well, long before it was made popular and Westernised by The Matrix.

I am still getting acquainted with Asian Horror. I saw Infection and thought it was OK as some parts seemed inconsistent and baffling. Any good recs? Yeah, I didn't really like Infection either. I thought the setting was good and the beginning started with promise, but it seemed as if the movie itself got lost in all its twists and turns. Not horrible, but being just mediocre causes it to become forgettable by lots of other fantastic Asian-horrors. I'm surprised that A Tale of Two Sisters isn't getting that much praise around here. The movie offered beautiful atmosphere, amazing character development, and great dialogue. I agree they could've done a better job explaining what was going on, but I thought it was terrific. Could quite possibly be my favorite Asian-horror, although I don't see too many. Hmm, all the ones I've seen have already had a remake come out. I just posted a review of Nightmare, and didn't really like it at all. So, not much help here, but I would definitely say to skip that mess.

Kuroneko is utterly essential viewing. The Untold Story is a fave of mine, great, intense, sick and thrilling. Riki-Oh is a masterpiece of gore. Calamity Of Snakes is a classic HK animal cruelty fest. Lady Terminator is utter, utter trash in the best possible way. Shura is more a disturbing drama than horror film but comes highly recommended if that's your typa thing. Ebola Syndrome is another fun HK sickfest. The Beasts is a top notch and underrated rape 'n' revenge flick. Assault! Jack The Ripper is a sleazy serial killer film with great production values. Jigoku was the first film to use gore as a special effect, and is nicely surreal and odd.
