And I ended up hating more than I previously did. It pisses me off because I really thought this was an excellent idea that was poorly executed. But damn it all if I can't point out what it is exactly that doesn't work on this film. Maybe one facet of it is that it all seemed very immature. The dialog, the acting, etc. I guess it came off as slightly more cheesy than I expected this film to be. Like I said, I can't quite put my finger on it, but there is something severely lacking in this movie. It wasn't scary or even all that gross. It was watchable, but nothing really worthy of praise. 5/10.

Yeah, Eli Roth better not fuck up with Cell. That COULD be a good movie.

Nice to see you over here, mdgeist316! I agree with you - I've given Hostel a second shot myself after being totally underwhelmed the first time I saw it, and my opinion hasn't changed in the least. I agree with the word you used: "immature". It comes across like some 70s exploitation fanboy making a fan flick, only with a budget and actors rather than in his backyard and with friends. It sounds great in theory, going back to that time of filmmaking, but it was of it's time, anything that tries to emulate it comes across as an homage full of schoolboy masturbatory material and self-congratulatory, smug in-jokes. Like the visual references to Don't Look Now and even more cheekily the aural reference to The Wicker Man, they just made me think "Yeah, right!", you have to earn the right to reference films of that calibre, and this just doesn't cut the mustard. Not to mention it just reminded me how much better those movies are and pulled me out of it. The worst crime, really, for me is the wasted potential of the script. Great idea for a setting that could have been used to drum up some tension, but Roth just hasn't got that in him, he shows his cards too early and goes for the "gore" points...which would be fine if this movie wasn't too mainstream and just not gory enough to satisfy on that level. Add a bunch of irritating, irrelevent characters and a threadbare plot...just a damn mess.

I hated it, too. I had really high hopes for Hostel but I was very disappointed in the finished product. In my opinion, they could have done a far better job with the story they had. But that's just me....

Guess I gotta be the minority here...I didn't hate it.
I didn't love it nor do I praise it, but it entertained me.
Films like these I tend not to really focus too much on the flaws (which are there, and in your face) and just try to have fun with them.
As a horror film, and due to all the hype that surrounded it when it was released (people supposedly having seizures in the audience, etc.) I can understand why alot of horror fans would be pissed off. Luckily, when I saw it I was already aware that it didn't live up. But then again, I wasn't really expecting anything less than a mindless film with some shitty dialouge and a little gore thrown in there (ex: Cabin Fever) As far as the comedy goes, I thought Ollie was kinda funny.
But yes, given the premise this could have been excellent if a different director had handled it.
Like I said didn't love it, but didn't hate it.

I tried giving that pile a rewatch once, same with the awful sequel. . .
Nope, didn't work. Still hate them both. And, even more than the films, I had the string of awful copycats that came after. I think the only Hostel copycats I even remotely enjoyed were the unpopular Turistas and the recent S2V Carver.
Both Hostels hit around the 3-4 mark for me. . . depending on my generosity.

Yeah, Eli Roth better not fuck up with Cell. That COULD be a good movie. PS- Where is your sig from? Cell. . . man, I'm not a fan of King's writing style but I tend to like his adaptations. I've yet to read a single one of his 'supernatural' books/novellas that I've enjoyed, but the ones that don't stray to the paranormal (like Misery, The Body, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, and, most importantly, The Long Walk (my favourite King work)) are rather good. Cell kept that streak alive. I couldn't get through it. It was just terrible. It's a cool idea, but nothing special. It wasn't well written. And now Eli Roth, a hack among hacks, is taking it for a ride. No thank you. If I want quality films like that, I'll stick to The Crazies, 28 Days Later..., and The Signal.
