Yo. I play acoustic guitar and bass. Haven't picked up my bass in awhile, though. Played bass in a band. We sucked. I'd like to get a new group together and play Black Flag/Misfits type stuff.
I try writing songs every now and then, but they all end up sounding the same. I just stick to playing Johnny Cash and Social D tunes.

Yo. I play acoustic guitar and bass. Awesomeness. I try writing songs every now and then, but they all end up sounding the same. I just stick to playing Johnny Cash and Social D tunes. Hell, most of the stuff out there sounds the same. I write regardless, though.

Yep, I took piano and guitar lessons as a kid and have been gigging with various bands, composing music and producing music for others for over 20 years now. All from the comfort of my basement recording studio ;D. I play 6 string and 12 string guitar, bass, banjo, drums, piano, violin....though my love for cinema is deep, music is and has always been my thang.
If anyone's interested, check out the webpage link in my profile to listen to a few tracks of a solo project that I've been busy with for a while now.

Good stuff, it is. I admire anyone who has the drive to be a recording artist. If I may be so bold as to ask, what sort of recording setup do you use?

My set-up is pretty extensive for what is essentially a home recording set-up. One PC running various sequencers and virtual instruments etc, one laptop so I can let stuff spill over onto it from my PC, a vintage korg synth, one keyboard/midi controller, two seperate midi controllers and a rack of hardware fxs, all midi'd up in a long chain. Plus a little soundproof booth in the corner for any vocals. This also doubles up as a soundproof rape cubicle, which is handy.

I've always been undecided regarding recording to a PC or an external sequencer. I currently use a simple USB interface connected to my laptop, into which I plug guitars, mics, and a synth. The sound quality's not bad in spite of what I paid for it.

I've always been undecided regarding recording to a PC or an external mixer. I currently use a simple USB interface connected to my laptop, into which I plug guitars, mics, and a synth. The sound quality's not bad in spite of what I paid for it. I think it's true that digital recording lacks the warmth and depth of recording extrenal eqipment. You can almost get around it using software like PSP VintageWarmer, but it's never quite the same. I've got a friend who refuses to touch digital stuff, he uses reel to reel equipment. I plug everything into my mixing desk, then onto my PC. I guess I choose this set-up for ease of use and flexibility. I like to 'see' my sounds on the screen, and spend ages fucking about with them. What sort of music do you record? I imagine you singing grim existential ballads, musing on the futility of existence

By the time I got into recording, digital was already well-established among amateurs, so I just kind of jumped on the bandwagon. It may not be as "warm," but for small-time recording of simple songs, it works fine. What sort of music do you record? I imagine you singing grim existential ballads, musing on the futility of existence Just take out the "grim"—I have done an existential ballad. I'm mostly into folk and other acoustic music, but depending on mood, I also dabble in reggae/ska, punk, surf rock, and straight-ahead rock.

I hope you didn't pay that price for it.... because you can get that model much cheaper... hell, it lists for $50 less than that site has it.... (My friend bought one at Musician's Friend last week for 200 less... they've been discontinued... and you should be mindful that the battery will go frequently (and most Yamaha electrics have this problem, and why does it need a battery? There's no reason to make a guitar than needs a battery... fuck no battery no sound guitars... fuckers)
That said... yeah, I play several. Guitar, bass, harmonica, cello, and a little piano.

I paid $120 less because there was a sale. And yeah, I had no idea that leaving the cable plugged in drains the battery. It went in a week, and I thought it was broken.

Shaggy's right; Musiciansfriend has it for $350. A bass that runs on batteries.

I went by the advice of one of my bass playing friends, and you have to remember that I live in Australia. The same guy is going to the US to get his bass, as apparently they are cheaper there.

Ah, I forgot about the Aussie factor. I'm not really much of a bassist, so I just got a cheap one that serves the purpose: www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Squier-Affinity-Series-P-Bass?sku=510424 (except in red)

I basically wanted a mid range bass to replace my extremely cheap one and heard from several people that the Yamaha was the way to go.

I forgot the Aussie factor as well...
My bass is the only Fender I have (it's a hand-me down 85 P-Series American Standard... not really a Fender fan either. The action is set to high for my tastes... and I fucking hate wammy bars) and it's a sparkle purple.... and I'm still manly when I play it... despite what you think.

I think you guys may know this...
I'm not the greatest fan of finger picking on bass, but since picking makes the bass sound too high, I'm grudgingly learning how to finger pick properly. Would getting a decent amp mean that I could play songs that are too fast to finger pick like Ramones stuff with a pick and make the sound low like the actual Ramones?

Just crank the bass knob up to 11 and leave the mid and treble low. You'll be rattling windows, even with a pick. Maybe of interest to you: www.rockometer.com/ramones/equipment/snd_bassamps.html

My mom taught (is that past tense for teach? Please excuse me, I'm drunk.) music at an elementary school for 25 years (she just retired). And my dad is a kick ass guitar player. While I was growing up they had a band. So anyway, I've been around musicians my whole life. I've been playing the guitar for over ten years. I go through phases where I won't play for a few months but I always find myself playing before my callouses disappear. I'm decent but not great.
